Kathmandu. A case has been filed in the Supreme Court against Sharad Ojha, Chairman of the Nepal Insurance Authority.
Advocate Indira Dhamala, who is also an agent of the National Life Insurance Company, filed a writ petition against Ojha on Chaitra 17, alleging that he submitted a fake work experience certificate to become the Chairman of the Insurance Authority. The writ petition claims that Ojha, who holds a master’s degree in management, submitted a fake work experience certificate required under the Insurance Act, 2079 BS. The writ petition filed against Ojha is being heard in the bench of Judge Nahakul Subedi.
The Insurance Act stipulates that the chairman should have a master’s degree or equivalent in a company in the field of insurance, monetary, banking, finance, commerce, management, statistics, mathematics, economics or law and have five years of high-level managerial work experience in the relevant field. However, the writ claims that Ojha, who is a journalist and a teacher, does not have the experience of working at the high-level managerial level required to become the chairman of the Insurance Authority.
Until some time ago, Ojha was working as a special correspondent in a media outlet. For the appointment to the Insurance Authority, the media outlet had produced a certificate of work experience stating that Ojha had performed managerial responsibilities.
Ojha had graduated in law and practiced law for about a year. Before that, it has also been revealed that he had worked for a few years after obtaining an agent’s license from Prabhu Mahalaxmi Life Insurance. Although he sold insurance policies, he does not have any experience working at a high management level in the insurance sector.
The cabinet meeting on February 12 had decided to appoint 33-year-old Ojha as the chairman of the Authority. He assumed the office of the chairman the next day, Falgun 13.
Earlier, a complaint has been filed with the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, raising questions about Chairman Ojha’s work experience.
