Kathmandu. Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for plotting a military coup.
Bolsonaro’s sentencing came hours after a five-judge panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court convicted him. The court has ruled that Bolsonaro led a conspiracy to stay in power after he lost the 2022 election to leftist rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Four of the five judges found Bolsonaro guilty and one acquitted him. Bolsonaro’s lawyers described the sentence as “excessive” and said they would appeal the decision. –Agency
