Kathmandu. The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has demanded immediate removal of control over social media.

The Federation issued a press release today demanding this. “We call upon the stakeholders to immediately remove the control over social media while respecting citizens’ right to information and freedom of press and expression,” it said.

The Federation has drawn serious attention to the government’s decision to shut down social media. “The Federation disagrees with the government’s decision to shut down unregistered social networks in Nepal from Thursday as it appears that the decision of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology will curtail the freedom of press and expression,” the statement said.

The FNJ has expressed surprise that the government has failed to pay attention to the fact that shutting down social media without any alternative will not only curtail the freedom of press and expression but also affect the right to information of citizens. “The FNJ is in favour of regulating social media,” the statement said, “but it never accepts any measure to control any media that affects the freedom of press and expression.” ’
