Kathmandu. The government has prepared an action plan to issue a digital nomad policy.
The government’s economic reform implementation action plan aims to release the digital nomadic policy within a year. A committee formed by the government to implement the recommendations of the report of the High Level Economic Reform Suggestion Commission formed under the chairmanship of former Secretary Rameshwor Prasad Khanal has prepared an action plan with sectoral and ministerial responsibilities and deadlines.
People who travel to remote areas of the world using laptops and the Internet are called digital nomads. This lifestyle allows them to work from different parts of the world. It also allows you to enjoy longer stays, from cafes to collaboration sites and potentially in different places.
According to the action plan, the government will make arrangements to issue multiple-entry digital nomadic visas with a validity of five years at a time based on evidence of earning more than $1,500 a month or more than $20,000 in bank reserves and health insurance worth $100,000 that can be paid for treatment in hospitals in Nepal. The spouse of such a visa holder will also be granted a visa.
Similarly, digital nomadic visa holders will be given a maximum of one year of residence permit at a time. The government has decided to allow digital mobile visa holders to open accounts of convertible currency in commercial banks of Nepal and transfer the amount saved in such accounts to foreign banks at any time if the amount saved in such account exceeds $ 50,000.
Similarly, the government will also make arrangements to take the remaining amount in the bank if the visa is not renewed after the expiry of the five-year visa period.
The government will also adopt a policy to impose a one-time income tax of 5 per cent on the foreign income earned by the digital nomadic in Nepal for 183 days or more, allow digital nomadic visa holders to purchase vehicles in their own name and register and recognize the driver’s certificate issued by the country with permanent residence.
The government will adopt a policy to invest in internet network development, well-equipped co-working workplaces and other physical infrastructure development to suit digital nomads, and encourage the private sector to invest.
