Kathmandu. Devastated by the end of World War II, Japan was seen by many as a nation that could never rise. In 1945, the atomic bombs were used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing millions of people. Two cities were completely destroyed.

At the same time, Japan’s industry, transportation, infrastructure, and administrative structure almost came to a standstill. The food crisis was deepened by clutter on farmland and supply chains. Economically, Japan fell to zero, while social unemployment, hunger, and unrest prevailed.

With the surrender, not only military power but also political, social and cultural self-esteem suffered a serious setback. But Japan rose from these difficult circumstances and performed an “economic miracle” that astonished the world in two decades.

With the new constitution of 1947, Japan embraced pacifism and focused its attention entirely on reconstruction. Basic infrastructure, education reform, investment in technology, and sustainable industrialization were key pillars of Japan’s renaissance. Emphasis was placed on human development and productivity by reducing defense spending.

During this period, Japanese society prioritized high discipline, hard work, and quality skills. The private sector, in particular, has made significant contributions to nation building. The companies helped Japan become self-reliant by working hand in hand with the government in new technology development, quality production, and export expansion. Cooperation between the government and the private sector facilitated the expansion of export-oriented industries.

As a result, from the 1960s to the 1980s, Japan became the world market leader in electronics, motors, steel and shipbuilding. The term ‘Made in Japan’ became synonymous with quality and trust. In today’s terms, Japan’s post-World War II resurgence was not just a rebuilding of its economy, but also a reflection of the nation’s self-confidence, determination, and culture of continuous improvement.

Japan turned defeat into an opportunity and set a rare example in world history. Today’s Japan is an inspiration to the world — proof that defeat can be turned into opportunity. This message is even more important for countries like Nepal.

We Nepalis should learn from Japan that nation-building is possible only when discipline, diligence, investment in technology, collaboration with private sector and the spirit of ‘moving ahead together’ are impossible.
