Customs duty not increased on import of EVs, old rate on hybrids

Kathmandu. The government has kept the tax rates unchanged amid the forecast of increasing customs duty and other taxes on the import of electric energy or battery-powered vehicles.

Next fiscal year 2082. Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel did not announce any change in the import duty of electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles in the budget and program presented in the federal parliament on Thursday. Along with this, the current fiscal year 2081. The tax rates implemented through the Finance Act in 1982 will continue for the next fiscal year as well.

However, the government has adopted a policy to encourage the construction of charging station infrastructure for electric vehicles. In his budget speech, Finance Minister Poudel announced that there would be no other tax duty by charging one per cent customs duty on import of equipment required for the manufacturing and installation of charging machines. He also informed that income tax exemption will be given to such industries for five years.

Importers had imported a large number of electric vehicles since last Chaitra amid forecasts of increase in customs duty and other taxes.
