China offers insurance benefits to post-retirement workers

Kathmandu. China has proposed its first regulation to protect the rights of people who work even after retirement. Which focuses on workplace safety and insurance coverage.

The draft issued by five central departments, including the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, has been open for public consultation until August 31, the China Daily reported. Under the proposal, employers will have to provide older workers with appropriate roles based on their skills and sign written agreements covering duties, hours, salaries, facilities and workplace safety.

Employers must pay at least the local minimum wage, avoid prescribing hazardous jobs and provide vocational safety training. Post-retirement workers will also be covered by work-related injury insurance.

China began a phased change in the higher retirement age in January. The retirement age has been increased from 60 to 63 in the case of men and from 50 or 55 to 55 or 58 in the case of women.

As of 2024, There are 313 million people aged 60 and over in China. That’s 22 percent of China’s total population.
