Kathmandu. Sushila Karki was born on Jestha 25, 2009 BS in Morang.
She has already registered her name as the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal and now she has also registered her name as the first woman Prime Minister. With her appointment as the Prime Minister, she has also registered the name of Nepal as the country in South Asia where there is a woman Prime Minister.
Nepal has got its first woman President, first woman Prime Minister and first woman Chief Justice within a short time of the implementation of republican system. In terms of inclusivity, this is a matter of pride in itself.
Karki is a well-known legal expert and writer. He has published two books.
A no-confidence motion was filed against him for issuing the order against the wishes of the ruling party when he was in the post of Chief Justice. However, she remained in office until her compulsory retirement.
She graduated from Banaras Hindu University and Tribhuvan University and started her legal career in 2036 BS. Karki, who is a hockey player, got the title of Senior Advocate in 2064 BS.
She was appointed as an ad-hoc judge at the Supreme Court in 2068 BS and was appointed as a permanent judge the following year.
On July 11, 2016, she was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal and became the first woman Chief Justice in the history of Nepal. During her tenure, she presided over several landmark cases, including those convicting high-ranking government officials.
His time on the bench was filled with a strong stand against corruption during his tenure as Chief Justice.
Even after retiring from the post of Chief Justice, she continued to appear in public forums in the campaign against corruption and the invigilance meeting against the government. Recently, she participated in street demonstrations to show moral support for the ‘Gen G’ movement.
On 17th Baisakh 2074, the then Maoist-led government filed a no-confidence motion against him in the parliament. However, after public pressure and a stay order from the Supreme Court, it was forced to withdraw the no-confidence motion.
She left the Supreme Court on June 7, 2017 with compulsory retirement, making important verdicts against political anomalies and corruption.
Sushila Karki, 73, has been nominated as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal on September 11 following an agreement reached in the wake of the ‘Gen G’ movement led by the younger generation on September 23 and 24.
She has been given the responsibility to hold the parliamentary elections within 6 months. Apart from this, the JG movement has given her the responsibility of making the investigation against corruption decisive as per the demands of the younger generation she represents, and investigating the repression of the ‘Gen G’ movement and taking action against the guilty.

Nepal is the third South Asian country after India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh to have a woman prime minister. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal on Friday, September 12, 2002.
Indira Gandhi in India, Bandaranaike in Sri Lanka, Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan, Shesh Hasina in Bangladesh have been prime ministers or heads of state.
He is the second person from Nepal’s judicial service to be nominated to the highest executive post. Prior to this, Khil Raj Regmi was nominated as the executive chairman or prime minister while serving as the Chief Justice.
