Supreme Court to file habeas corpus petitions from Sunday

Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) is set to begin hearing the habeas corpus petitions from coming Sunday.

Issuing a press release today, Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut informed about this. Raut has expressed sorrow over the loss caused to the court buildings due to arson, stone-pelting, vandalism and looting at the Supreme Court and other courts of the country on September 24 during the Genji agitation.

“The arson and vandalism attack on the courts, which is the centre of people’s faith, has caused unimaginable damage to the important documents of the citizens, court equipments, vehicles and others,” Raut said. “Important documents of Nepal’s judicial history have almost been destroyed,” he said, adding, “In such a dire situation, we are committed to bring the courts into operation at the earliest to address the aspirations of the general public for justice by discharging the responsibility entrusted to the judiciary by the Constitution of Nepal.” We express it. ’

Accordingly, an emergency full meeting of the Supreme Court held today decided to start the process of registration and regular hearing of the habeas corpus application at the Supreme Court from September 29, 2020.

The statement also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the incidents that took place on September 9 and 24. “We wish for the speedy recovery of all the Nepali citizens injured in the incident,” the statement reads, “We express our sincere thanks to the judges, employees, legal practitioners, law students, security personnel and the general public who are working for the protection of court documents, documents and physical resources in the absence of arson and destruction.” ’
