Kathmandu. In India, a parliamentary committee has suggested that the central government should include “new and emerging” disasters such as heat waves in its disaster management plans.

The parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs, in its report submitted to the Rajya Sabha last week, also recommended setting up a system to regularly review and update the official list of disasters.

“The committee recommends that the ministry may include new and emerging disasters such as heat waves in its disaster management plans. It also recommends setting up a formal mechanism for periodic review and updating of the list of notified disasters to ensure that the Act remains responsive to relevant and emerging disaster risks, through consultation with experts, stakeholders and affected communities,” the report said.

A 31-member committee headed by BJP Rajya Sabha MP Radha Mohan Das Agrawal has urged the ministry to prepare a study and plan for long-term disaster preparedness, keeping in mind climate change and the increasing frequency of disasters, Asian Insurance Post reported.
