Stoma care training for nurses at Nepal Medical College

Kathmandu. Nurses at Nepal Medical College have been trained on stoma care. The college has provided training to the nurses in accordance with the continuing nursing education related to stoma care to develop their skills and capacity.

In the training, the hospital director of the college, Prof. Dr. Nilmani Upadhyay, GI Surgeon Pvt. Ltd. Dr. Dr. Nabin Pokharel, Ursurgeon Pvt. Ltd. Dr. Krishna Kazi Bhumi, Associate Professor Dr. Dr. Prakash Poudel, MCH GI Surgeon The training was conducted by Gonish Hoda and Nursing Matron Nabina Singh.

In the training, experts from the Department of GI Surgery, Urology and Nursing provided detailed guidance on stoma management principles and best practices.

The training covered topics such as types of stoma and their indicators, pre and post-operative stoma assessment, stoma site marking and basic principles of skin care, stoma appliance selection, fitting and problem solving, common complications and their management, patient counselling and long-term follow-up, multidisciplinary approach to stoma care.

Each topic was presented with case-based discussions and real examples of surgical exercises, which helped the participants seamlessly connect the theoretical knowledge to practical situations.

Hands-on training is believed to boost nurses’ clinical efficiency and confidence. The training consisted of a demonstration of how to properly put on and open appliances, practice on stoma models and simulation manikins, techniques for prevention and hygiene of skin damage, excursion prevention and hygiene techniques, practice of managing complex stoma cases, and step-by-step demonstration of emergency stoma care.

The training not only helped the new nurses acquire basic practical skills, but also created a conducive environment for experienced trainers to share advanced techniques. The college has been providing clinical training and training to the nurses and staff working in the college from time to time.
