Kathmandu. Police have succeeded in seizing foreign currency worth 250 million rupees that was being smuggled towards China.
A team of the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office succeeded in seizing 250 million rupees worth of euros and US dollars that were being smuggled from a truck bearing the number Na 7 Kha 1652 from the Jhor area of Tokha Municipality in Kathmandu on Monday night. Police have also arrested 43-year-old Kushan Lama of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality in Sindhupalchowk along with a large amount of foreign currency.
The truck was heading towards Kerung in Rasuwa. The police’s preliminary investigation has revealed that the foreign currency may be being smuggled from Kerung to China.
The arrested person and the seized foreign currency were made public by the police at a press conference on Tuesday. The police seized the foreign currency while Lama was hiding the money behind the driver’s seat by making a false bottom.
Lama is a person who has previously been imprisoned for 5 years in a gold smuggling case. This time, the police suspect that the smuggling group may have used Lama as a porter to smuggle foreign currency from Nepal to China.
The police have stated that the arrested Lama will be kept in custody for further investigation.
