Kathmandu. Krishna Shrestha is a name that everyone knows in the life insurance sector. Krishna is an insurance agent by profession. He was born in 2042 BS in Chandragiri Municipality-15 Naikap, Kathmandu. Krishna’s childhood was difficult. His father is a driver by profession and his mother is a housewife. Krishna, who spent his childhood facing immense deprivation, has now gained momentum in his life. He has studied up to Plus Two.
Krishna, who grew up in poverty from a young age, got the opportunity to observe poverty, happiness, joy, sadness and laughter from a close distance. ‘Suffering is also a kind of positive lesson,’ Krishna said, ‘We learn lessons from whatever we experience in life. If we experience suffering, we become mature, we can face suffering and move forward by fighting against future challenges. But, if we experience happiness, we may leave it as if life is like this, it will go on anyway. That is why suffering is an opportunity to change our lives or move forward.’
Krishna is currently working as an agency manager at Citizen Life’s Maitidevi branch. Apart from his friends, neighbors, and family, he reaches out to strangers to get insurance. He also talks about insurance wherever he goes for sightseeing or other work. Whether people buy insurance or not, his goal is to get them to pay for it. He says, ‘I always provide knowledge about insurance wherever I go. And I am not saying that you have to buy insurance, but it is important to understand insurance.’
Before entering the insurance sector, Krishna used to teach cultural dance in schools. He also ran an electronics shop and a restaurant business. He is still running a restaurant business. However, Krishna is now dedicating his full time to the insurance sector by employing people in his restaurant business.
Krishna, who was working hard in his own restaurant business, was inspired by Samjhana Pariyar to enter the insurance sector while getting insurance. Krishna also became interested in the insurance agent profession while getting his own insurance. Finally, Krishna started working by getting an insurance agent license from Citizen Life in 2077 BS.
After getting an agent’s license, Krishna first insured his sister. Then he started insuring friends, acquaintances, and anyone. After getting a license, he did good business. While doing insurance, he got encouragement in this profession. With encouragement, he became more and more confident and confident that he could do this profession. He took agent training and then his understanding of insurance grew.
‘Insurance does the job of showing your financial participation even after you die,’ says Krishna, ‘Insurance is the main basis for saving. Insurance is very important. Insurance is more important for those who do not have money than for those who have money. Those who have financial problems. Yes, those people need insurance.’ Krishna suggests that when taking an insurance proposal to an insured, one should understand his family situation. ‘When taking an insurance proposal, I have always looked at his financial situation, income situation, whether his family already has insurance or not, and what are his financial resources? I have always taken the insurance proposal forward,’ he said.
Krishna said, ‘I had insured a person who was my brother. After 3 years of taking the insurance, both of his kidneys failed. Then he got a claim payment for a fatal disease from Citizen Life. Then his family and he were very happy. That incident also reminded me that insurance is good. Then I got the inspiration that insurance is necessary for everyone, everyone should be brought under its purview.’
Krishna understands that being an agent is a profession with a social spirit. ‘In addition to income, this profession also has a social spirit. Where both the insured and the insured are good,’ he added, ‘Moreover, the future of the insured is better than that of the insured. When we say social service, there is no financial aspect, if we do social work for someone, we do not get money, but on the contrary, we spend our own money. However, being an agent is a profession that also makes you self-reliant while doing social work. You can also adopt this profession if you can speak. That’s why I’m happy with this profession.’
Krishna has changed his lifestyle after joining the agent profession. He says that after becoming an insurance agent, his financial path has become stronger and he has received good feedback from friends, family and acquaintances. ‘This profession has become a guardian for me’, he said, ‘After joining this profession, my financial side has become stronger and my public relations have increased.’
Krishna says that he feels very proud when he receives various awards and honors for doing good work. ‘I got the opportunity to know everyone. I got the opportunity to meet people from young to old. I got the opportunity to observe society and its people closely. I am very satisfied with this profession’, he said.
‘In Newari, insurance means ‘to give’. Therefore, insurance means to give. Insurance means to give a return’, Krishna said, ‘Whether after the insurance period is completed or in the event of an accident or when a person dies, insurance is supposed to give a return to the person. Therefore, do not consider it difficult to get insurance. One day or another, it will give a return with benefits.’ Krishna has experience that there are also those who say that the agent profession is bad. ‘However, if you understand and adopt this profession, you will not have to go abroad after starting this profession. The income earned abroad is earned in Nepal from this profession’, he said, ‘This is the work of society, this society criticizes everyone. If society criticizes the Prime Minister, then we agents are ordinary. However, they have scolded without understanding, it would be better if they paid the insurance.’
Krishna suggests that to be a successful insurance agent, one should be diligent in their profession. ‘An agent should have patience, knowledge about the company, information about the company’s policies, be hardworking, honest, tolerant, be able to explain insurance and listen to the customer’, he said, ‘This profession is best for those who come because I want to make a career in the insurance sector.’
Krishna urges those who want to enter the insurance agent profession to come to this field only after understanding and studying and having knowledge related to insurance. He says that this profession is good because it allows one to be financially strong even by working in their free time.
Krishna says that he is ready to fulfill every goal given by the company and fulfills the goal. He has been successful in becoming MDRT 3 times in a row. Similarly, he has also been honored with cash and bagged the third position in the number of policies from Citizen Life’s Nepal branch. He has been awarded the Silver Club in 2021, the Diamond Club in 2022, the Gold Club in 2023, and the Platinum Club in 2024.
