Kathmandu. Diwali is the festival of lights, and the festivities often involve the lighting of candles, oil lamps (diyas), firecrackers, and cooking a sweet dish for family and friends and enjoying together as a family.
The weather during Tihar also evokes feelings of joy, warmth and unity.
The fire brigade of the metropolis has been advising us to take precaution to prevent fire during the festival.
By combining tradition with fire safety awareness, we can make this celebration safe and memorable by doing everything right and meticulous.
In support of the festival, we’ve brought up some top tips on how to stay safe this year:
LED battery-powered lamps are very effective, reusable, available in many colors and can be used instead of candles. This keeps children safe from fires.
If you light candles or oil lamps, never pay attention to them. When you step out of your room or when you go out with your family to watch the festive spirit outside the house, or when you go to visit the temple, blow out the candles. Or, even if you are lighting a candle, place the candle in a wide container filled with water so that it rests in a container above the water, and even if the candle falls, keep it in such a way that it falls into the water.
When a candle or lamp is lit, the curtain or the fire is not close to any decoration that can be easily picked up.
Do not burn too many candles in close proximity to you, as this can ignite the flames. Do not touch or move candles or lamps with your hands after lighting them.
Keep matches and lighters out of reach of small children and never play with matches or lighters.
Secure Exit:
Even if there’s a fire, make sure everyone in the household is aware of escapes and what to do in case of an emergency.
Keep the windows and doors of your house open so that the smoke does not fill the room in the event of a fire.
Cooking Caution:
Extra care should be taken when cooking dishes or lighting candles. This is because traditional clothing can be very flammable and any unexpected injury can occur if not taken care of during this time or in the case of children without parental supervision.
Please be careful if you are wearing loose clothing while cooking as it can easily catch fire, sometimes the fire has already started without you even knowing it. So do not cook alone in the kitchen during the festival.
Don’t leave the cooking unnoticed and keep small children away from the place you cook.
Caution during fireworks:
The practice of having fun with fireworks has also increased during the TAG_OPEN_span_36 festival. This is also the cause of fires and unimaginable accidents during Tihar. Children, in particular, are unsafe when they try to enjoy fireworks, setting off fireworks, pots, or rattlesnakes in an unsafe manner. Doing so without parental supervision carries the risk of fire or explosion.
Even if the child chooses, such activities should be allowed only under the supervision of the parents. Also TAG_CLOSE_span_35 TAG_OPEN_span_35, it is safe for parents to burn the rattlesnakes and hand them over to the children only after the sacrifice is completed.
Also, it is comparatively safe to light the incense sticks of the puja to burst firecrackers. Since the sink is longer, it helps to light it at a distance from the firecracker. However, the best way to avoid the use of explosives during the festival is to avoid it.
“We wish you all a safe and joyous Diwali and enjoy every festive season of Tihar to the fullest.
