Govt directs insurance claims to be paid in advance

Kathmandu. A meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Government of Nepal has directed the government to provide fifty percent of the claim payment of property damaged during the Gen G agitation in advance.

Briefing media persons about the decisions of the Cabinet meeting on Sunday evening, Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal said that the insurance companies should pay up to fifty percent of the compensation claim for the damaged properties.

He said, “The Insurance Authority will have to make arrangements to provide up to fifty percent advance of the claim.

The meeting also decided to form an evaluation committee with the participation of the National Planning Commission’s Secretariat, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) and experts representatives of GenG to assess the damages and submit a report to the government within 45 days.

Likewise, the meeting decided to waive 50 per cent customs duty on imported materials for the reconstruction of physical structures damaged during the agitation, said Minister Khanal.

The government also decided to establish a National Reconstruction Fund for the reconstruction of public property and call on the general public to contribute to the fund. Minister Khanal said that if the business establishments contribute to the fund, they can claim the expenses under the social responsibility.

The government has also decided to auction the property of physical structures and vehicles damaged during the agitation by waiving them from the government property account and handing over the responsibility to the Ministry of Urban Development at the central level and the District Administration Office at the district level.

The government has also announced a payroll protection plan to protect the income of the workers and employees of the industries that have been closed due to the abnormal circumstances caused by the Gen G movement. Minister Khanal said that arrangements would be made in such a way that the business enterprises concerned can distribute remuneration by taking concessional loan from banks while those enterprises unable to take concessional loan can pay by taking money from the National Reconstruction Fund.
