Government brings strict laws for civil servants, now imprisonment according to bribe amount

Kathmandu. The government has made strict legal provisions to discipline civil servants and make them responsible for their duties.

The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has made strict legal provisions for civil servants by bringing an act to amend the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059 BS. This Act was published in the Nepal Gazette on Chaitra 3.

Amending Sub-section (1) of Section 3 of the original Act, a provision has been made for imprisonment of varying amounts depending on the amount if a public servant accepts a bribe from someone to do or not do any work.

According to the amended Act, now a provision has been made for imprisonment of 1 month to 6 months if a public servant accepts a bribe of 50 thousand rupees. Similarly, the Act has made a provision for imprisonment of 6 months to 1 year for taking a bribe of more than 50,000 rupees up to 100,000 rupees, imprisonment of 1 year to 2 years for taking a bribe of more than 100,000 rupees up to 500,000 rupees, imprisonment of 2 years to 4 years for taking a bribe of more than 500,000 rupees up to 250,000 rupees, and imprisonment of 4 years to 6 years if it is proven that a bribe of more than 250,000 rupees up to 500,000 rupees is taken.

Similarly, if a public servant takes a bribe of more than 500,000 rupees up to 100,000 rupees, imprisonment of 6 years to 8 years for taking a bribe of more than 100,000 rupees up to 100,000 rupees, imprisonment of 8 years to 10 years for taking a bribe of any amount exceeding 100,000 rupees, imprisonment of 10 years to 14 years for taking a bribe of any amount exceeding 100,000 rupees.

Similarly, the amount taken as a bribe by a public servant will also be confiscated. The arrangement is mentioned in the Act.
