Kathmandu. Madagascar, an island nation on Africa’s east coast in the Indian Ocean, is now experiencing violent Genji youth protests.

According to the Associated Press, a special military unit has taken over the front line against the government. The revolt is being treated as a possible coup. Madagascar’s President Andriy Rajoelina has been forced to flee the country. The development comes after three weeks of protests by the Youth Movement (Genji Madagascar).

Madagascar’s average age is under 20 years of age, and three-quarters of its population of about 30 million lives below the poverty line. According to the World Bank, the country’s per capita GDP fell by 45 percent between 1960 and 2020.

The president’s office announced his address to the nation on Monday evening. But it was suspended after soldiers attacked the state broadcaster. Opposition leader Citénée Randrianasoloniaco said that according to reports, Rajoelina fled the country on a French military plane on Sunday. However, the president’s office has not confirmed his current status.

The special military unit known as Capsat, which helped Rajoelina come to power in 2009, claims to have taken control of all the armed forces. Capsat commander Colonel Michael Randrianirina said one soldier was killed during the clash but denied a coup. “The army has answered the voice of the people. ’

The protests began on September 25, over the lack of water and electricity. The Genji youth have dubbed the movement ‘Genji Madagascar’. The movement gradually grew into a nationwide demonstration against corruption and inequality.

According to the United Nations, at least 22 people have been killed so far. However, the government has denied this figure.

France, a former colonialist of Madagascar, declined to comment on reports of the president’s removal. The U.S. Embassy advised its citizens to stay home amid the volatile situation. The African Union called on the military and civilians to remain calm and avoid any violence.
