Floods kill 189 in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Kathmandu. At least 189 people have been killed in flash floods in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.  Many others have gone missing after being swept away by the floods.

Five more people were killed when an emergency rescue helicopter crashed during heavy rains. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Agency, since the end of June, monsoon rains have caused extensive damage across the country, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the northern regions, due to devastating floods and landslides. Among the dead are 163 men, 14 women and 12 children.

As many as 45 houses, three schools and eight other structures have been destroyed in the floods. The provincial government has said that heavy rainfall is likely to continue till August 21.  A total of 500 million Pakistani rupees has been announced by the government for relief and rescue operations in the districts most affected by the floods.

Two pilots and three crew members were killed in a helicopter crash that reached the flood-affected areas carrying relief materials.
