Kathmandu. Nepal’s Madhes province is facing drought this year. The government has also declared Madhes province as a drought-hit area.
The Society of Crop Breeding and Genetic Science Nepal (PIBAGSON) has given some suggestions regarding this serious problem. After discussing with the members of the society, it has been suggested that the following can be done for the problems seen in the paddy crop created by drought in The Province.
- Since there is a possibility of rain after some time, suitable varieties such as Chaite-5, Hardinath-1, Hardinai-4. Prepare seedlings by keeping nurseries of other varieties of dry varieties.
- The possibility of SRI and DSR seems to be good, so emphasis should be laid on planting paddy through this technology.
- Alternative crops such as millet, fallow, chino, kaguno, maas, bodi, junello, paddy millet, etc.
- Cultivating varieties with mixed crops.
- NARC to start action research on alternative crops and technologies in the affected areas.
- It would be appropriate to prepare the seeds of the crops in the affected areas across the country through NARC and the Department of Agriculture and facilitate the supply of seeds to the farmers.
- Can search for varieties of daiya that ripen in a short period of time.
- Would be better off including narc experts and crop breeders in the study group of the affected areas.
