Kathmandu. A powerful naturally occurring molecule in the guava plant has shown great potential in the fight against liver cancer.

This molecule, called psiguadil A, was first isolated from guava fruit. But now, with the help of new technology, it is possible to synthesize at a lower cost and on a large scale in the laboratory.

Scientific Proofs and Mechanisms

The team, led by University of Delaware chemist Professor William Chen, has made a breakthrough in the ‘total synthesis’ of this complex molecule. The method was published in the journal Angwande Chemie.

This compound can slow down the growth of liver cancer cells’ reproduction. It directly inhibits tumor growth and also supports the body’s natural immune system.

Other molecules found in guava have also been shown to kill cancer cells and have anti-cancer effects. The antioxidant properties present in the extract of guava leaves and fruits help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Liver and bile duct cancers (such as hepatocellular carcinoma) are among the world’s deadliest diseases. The 5-year survival rate is less than 15%. Only limited safe treatments are available for advanced disease.

This discovery gives strength to plant-based molecules as innovative options for cancer care. Guava’s rich nutritional profile (vitamins, antioxidants) has placed it at the forefront of nutritional medicine research.

Upcoming Steps and Medical Implications

The Delaware team has found a way to synthesize at a low cost using common chemicals. This has eliminated the problem of natural deficiencies in this molecule and made it possible to conduct large-scale research.

Organizations such as the National Cancer Institute are collaborating to further test the molecule against liver cancer cells and other tumor types. If successful, drugs derived from guava molecules could offer safer alternatives than toxic chemotherapy. This improves patient outcomes and reduces negative effects.

This discovery has opened a new chapter of hope in the fight against cancer by combining the chemical power of a natural food source and the innovative spirit of modern medical research.
