90 per cent vaccine coverage against cholera in Parsa and Bara

Kathmandu. In order to control the risk of cholera epidemic, the vaccination campaign against cholera conducted in Parsa and Bara has succeeded in covering 90 percent of the population.

The Ministry of Health with the help of donor organizations had launched a month-long vaccination campaign in both the districts of Madhesh Province on October 12. Due to the high risk of cholera, vaccination campaigns were conducted in all 14 local levels of Parsa. The vaccination campaign was conducted in 6 local levels of Bara district.

According to the Immunization Section of the Family Welfare Division, 90 per cent of the population in Parsa and 88 per cent of the population in Bara have been vaccinated. A total of 589,354 people have been vaccinated against cholera through 1,800 vaccination centres in Parsa and 322,926 people through 1,200 vaccination centres in Bara.

Although Madhesh Province is comparatively weaker than other provinces in terms of health awareness, the success of this year’s vaccination campaign has made health officials happy. This is the highest ever population access to the vaccination campaign against cholera.

A significant number of cholera patients were seen in hospitals in Birgunj of Parsa last month due to sewage leakage in the sewage and drinking water supply system. According to the department, 1,685 cases of cholera were confirmed in Bara and Parsa. The National Public Health Laboratory has confirmed that cholera belongs to the Ovan serogroup.

Meanwhile, for the fourth consecutive year, the Health Office Parsa has been successful in retaining the title of the best office in Madhes for its excellent performance in the health service.
