11 children die after consuming cough syrup in India, complaint filed against doctors and pharmaceutical companies

Kathmandu. At least 11 children have died after consuming cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district.

The Indian police have registered an FIR against government doctor Praveen Soni, the owners of the coffee syrup manufacturing company, Sreesan Pharmaceuticals and other responsible persons. According to the copy of the FIR, between August and September, many children below the age of 5 years were brought to the CHC Parasia complaining of common cold, cough and fever. Most of the children are taken by Dr. Praveen Soni gave coldriff cough syrup and other medicines. After a few days, the children showed symptoms such as obstruction of urination, swelling of the face and vomiting. The investigation confirmed kidney failure.

The FIR states that many children were referred to Nagpur. At least 10 people died while undergoing treatment. The first death was of four-year-old Shivam Rathore on September 4 and the last death of two-year-old Yogita Thakre on October 4.

Following these deaths, the Madhya Pradesh government wrote to the Tamil Nadu government on October 1, requesting an investigation against the drugmaker. After this investigation, the Tamil Nadu Drugs Control Department confirmed that the coldriff cough syrup manufactured by Sreesan Pharmaceuticals was ‘adulterated’.

According to the FIR, diethylene glycol was found in cold driff cough syrup manufactured by Sreesan Pharmaceuticals in Tamil Nadu. The syrup contained 48.6 percent diethylene glycol by weight and volume. This means that every 100ml of coldriff cough syrup contains 48.6 grams of the chemical. Which is considered to be very dangerous for health.

According to the FIR, the drug was brought to the market despite knowing that it could be dangerous for children and was given to young children.
