KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a $285 million (about Rs 38 billion) concessional loan and $20 million (about Rs 2.65 billion) grant assistance for the SASEC Highway Improvement and Ecosystem Rehabilitation Project. <\/p>\n
The agreement was signed by the Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Finance and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Nepal amid a program organized at the Ministry of Finance on Friday. <\/p>\n
Under this project, the Narayangadh-Hetauda section of the East-West Highway and the Muglin-Abukhaireni TAG_OPEN_em_12 section of the Prithvi Highway will be upgraded. <\/em> <\/p>\n
The stakeholders have stressed on the timely completion of the project without harming protected wildlife and environment. <\/p>\n
This road upgradation project is considered very important for Nepal’s overall economy, supply management and livelihood. The Narayangadh-Hetauda section is the main route for transporting goods coming from Birgunj, the largest trade point of Nepal, to different parts of the country, which facilitates the transportation of daily essentials, fuel, and raw materials. Similarly, the Muglin-Abukhaireni section directly connects the country’s capital Kathmandu to the tourist city of Pokhara and other parts of western Nepal. <\/p>\n
The expansion of these road sections will help reduce traffic congestion and travel time, reduce road accidents, market industrial and agricultural products of Chitwan and Hetauda and promote domestic and external tourism. <\/p>\n
