Kathmandu. A cyber attack on the database of Singapore healthcare company Alliance Medinet has stolen the personal information of about 110,000 people, including customers of six insurance companies. However, there is no evidence of an attack on the insurance companies’ own computer systems. <\/p>\n
Alliance Healthcare Group disclosed this information in a filing with the Singapore Stock Exchange on October 24. Its subsidiary, Alliance Medinet, handles claims for employee healthcare and medical expenses on behalf of various insurance companies. For this purpose, the company keeps customer personal data. <\/p>\n
HSBC Life, Income Insurance, SingLife, Great Eastern, Cigna and Tokio Marine are among the 6 insurance companies affected. <\/p>\n
According to the information released, the data of 3,995 HSBC Life customers, 6,103 Tokyo Marine customers, 323 SingLife customers, and about 70 income insurance customers has been affected or stolen. The total number of affected Great Eastern and Cigna customers has not been disclosed. <\/p>\n
The stolen information includes names, ID numbers, phone numbers, dates of birth, and insurance details. Preliminary investigations indicate that the bank account information of 7 people and the medical information of one person may have been stolen. Great Eastern has reported that the bank account information of three of its members may have been stolen. Cigna has said that the medical information of one member was stolen. <\/p>\n
This information is at risk of fraud through fraudulent phone calls, messages, or e-mails. However, there have been no confirmed reports of misuse of information in this incident. It is currently unclear how the attack occurred or if any data has been deleted. <\/p>\n
The concerned insurance companies have said that customers will be able to access their insurance and submit claims normally. Affected people are being alerted. Customers are advised not to provide personal information or bank account details when asking for suspicious phone calls or messages. <\/p>\n
Alliance Healthcare said it had hired experts to investigate the cause of the attack and had implemented a 24-hour surveillance system. The incident was reported to Singapore’s Personal Information Protection Commission on October 21. The commission is investigating.
