KATHMANDU: Serbia’s long-serving leader Aleksandar Vucic has conceded defeat to the student movement in the parliamentary elections. “We don’t have the final results yet, but it’s clear that we have lost this election,” he said. <\/p>\n
Right-wing populist leader Vucic celebrated across the country after conceding defeat. “Serbia will now become an independent state,” said Ilija Sardanovic, leader of the winning party’s student list. \u2019<\/p>\n
According to preliminary data from the Serbian Election Commission, a record number of people voted this time. Commentators believed that a higher turnout could benefit the student movement. <\/p>\n
The protest against corruption had been going on for two years. After two years of protests, Bhuchik decided to call an immediate election. <\/p>\n
The protests began after 16 people were killed when a canopy of a railway station collapsed in the city of Novi Sad. It was seen as a symbol of corruption and negligence. <\/p>\n
Vucic served as president twice. He was not allowed to run for a third term, leading his party, the Serbian Progressive Party. His goal was to become prime minister again. He resigned from that post in 2017. <\/p>\n
