KATHMANDU: The United Nations Climate Adaptation Fund (UNCDF) has approved more than $44.92 million (Rs 79.92 crore) of financial assistance for Nepal to build adaptation capacity to the effects of climate change. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment, three multi-dimensional projects submitted by Nepal have been unanimously approved by the 47th Board Meeting of the United Nations Climate Adaptation Fund. <\/p>\n
The Ministry has taken the approval of all three projects presented by Nepal as a significant achievement at a time when there is a high demand for financial resources for climate adaptation worldwide. The ministry said in a statement that this success will contribute significantly to managing the economic burden on Nepal’s environment and reducing the risk of natural disasters caused by climate change. <\/p>\n
1) Green Koshi Project <\/p>\n
The project aims to conserve the ecosystem of the Koshi region and enhance climate resilience through nature-based solutions, for which financial assistance worth US$ 9,927,750 has been approved. The implementing agency of this project is the National Fund for Nature Conservation. <\/p>\n
2) Hindu Kush Himalaya Early Warning System Strengthening Project <\/p>\n
The project for the Weather Early Warning System has been approved with the objective of enhancing the climate adaptation capacity of communities by making the flood and landslide early warning system in the Himalayan region more technology-friendly and strengthened. The project has been proposed and approved by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) for a financial assistance of USD 30 million. <\/p>\n
3. Lumbini Province Local Led Climate Action Project: <\/p>\n
The project, which aims to build resilient communities through nature-friendly climate action led by local communities in Lumbini Province, has received a financial assistance of USD 4,998,707. Its implementing agency is UN Habitat. <\/p>\n
The Ministry expects that the approval of all the submitted projects will contribute to the conservation of Nepal’s ecosystems, modernization of disaster early warning systems, and enhancement of climate resilience of communities at the local level.
