Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets on Saturday night in various French cities against the price rise. Due to which there are clashes with the police in many places. According to officials, about 1,000 people were arrested.

Peaceful demonstrations had taken place a day earlier. During which police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators in several cities, including Paris. Barricades were set up in Marseille, and people vandalized a shop in Bordeaux. Authorities have claimed that they have managed to escape the widespread violence and looting seen in the past week.

Images have emerged during these demonstrations, which have been described as the worst situation ever seen in France. The Interior Ministry said that more than 4 lakh people took to the streets on Saturday. While the unions claim that the number is around 8 lakh.

Some 70,000 police officers were deployed and restrictions were imposed in several cities to prevent demonstrations against overcrowding and poor school conditions from escalating into chaos.

In fact, previous protests have outnumbered police officers, looted hundreds of shops and set fire to many buildings.

French President Emmanuel Macron ordered earlier this week that only demonstrations organized by recognised trade unions would be allowed. On Saturday, the peaceful march from the Porte d’Italia in Paris to the Porte de Vincennes ended in clashes between protesters and riot police.

The police operation also included a special unit which typically conducts organized crime and counter-terrorism operations.

Some protesters were seen building makeshift barracks and throwing stones at the officers. Meanwhile, police were seen baton-charging groups of masked youths who were breaking the windows of the car dealership.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said, “During the march, several thousand radical activists gathered in the back line. This included about 500 people identified as rioters. ’

In the southern port city of Marseille, garbage cans were set on fire and metal plates were used to block roads. In France’s second-largest city, a police car was seen moving through a burning barracks.

Meanwhile, in the southern city of Bordeaux, some demonstrators, dressed in black and covering their faces, were seen tearing boards from buildings to create roadblocks. In Lyon, police used tear gas to disperse crowds gathered in a local administration forbidden area. “There were about 150 of us. Most of them were high school and university students,” said one protester in Lyon, France’s third-largest city, adding, “Immediately after that, tear gas was fired. Nothing was seen on the streets.” – Agency

Kathmandu.
