The world’s first personalized mRNA cancer vaccine ‘Intimaran’ has reduced the risk of cancer recurrence by 42 percent in a Phase 3 global clinical trial. The results of this vaccine developed by the American pharmaceutical company Moderna have given a new ray of life to millions of cancer patients around the world. <\/p>\n
It is not the same medicine for everyone like a normal vaccine. It is specially prepared by studying the tumor’s own biological structure (DNA) in each patient’s body. This mRNA vaccine trains the natural immunity of the human body by identifying abnormal proteins in cancer cells. Trained immune cells find and destroy cancer microscopic cells hidden inside the body. <\/p>\n
When the vaccine was combined with pembrolizumab, a popular autoimmune drug used against cancer, there were surprising results. Eighty-two percent of the patients who received treatment were completely cancer-free for two years. The rate of preventing cancer from spreading to other parts of the body was 88.5 percent, or about 9 out of 10 people. <\/p>\n
Professor Georgina Long, Australia’s leading researcher and the 2024 Australian of the Year Professor Georgina Long, who is leading this historic discovery, is very excited about this success. <\/p>\n
News.com quoted Professor Georgina as saying, “This is a revolutionary leap forward, like the first flight in human history or sending the first email. Just as the first email changed the media forever, this technology will completely change the future of cancer treatment. It will be a great hope not only for melanoma (skin cancer), but for all cancer patients in the future.” <\/p>\n
Professor Long, who is also the medical director of Australia’s Melanoma Institute, said that in the history of cancer drug development, the body’s immune system has not been able to protect the body’s immune system from developing tumors in this way. <\/p>\n
This clinical trial was conducted on 1,137 patients around the world who were at high risk of recurrence of the disease even after cancer surgery and removal of tumors. The results of this detailed study conducted in more than 150 locations around the world are being officially released at the annual conference of the European Society of Medical Oncology. <\/p>\n
In the past, research and breakthroughs in skin cancer (melanoma) later proved to be a boon in the treatment of lung, kidney, head, throat, and bladder cancers. Therefore, experts are confident that this technology will be equally effective for other complex cancers as well. <\/p>\n
