KATHMANDU \u2014 At least 16 people were killed and hundreds injured after a powerful earthquake struck China’s Tibet Autonomous Region on Thursday evening. <\/p>\n
According to Chinese state media, a 7-magnitude earthquake struck in the mountainous region of Tibet. Xinhua quoted the local emergency management bureau as saying that the epicenter of the quake was in Bakken county of Nagku province on Thursday night. <\/p>\n
China has declared Tibet an autonomous region after annexing it in the 1950s. Bakken County is located 400 kilometers northeast of the Tibetan capital Lhasa. <\/p>\n
Authorities have declared a state of emergency and deployed rescue teams to the affected areas. Another 32 people were injured. <\/p>\n
According to local reports, power supply has been disrupted in the affected areas and 339 houses have been destroyed. Landslides have blocked roads in the area. This has further hampered the access of rescue teams to the affected high-altitude areas. <\/p>\n
Powerful earthquakes were also felt in the Tibetan cities of Kwamado and Nyingchi. Viral videos on social media showed villagers running down the streets in the dark as buildings shook dangerously. However, these reports have not been independently confirmed. <\/p>\n
The area has been identified as being at risk of a devastating earthquake. In 2023, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the nearby mountainous Chinese province of Gansu. More than 120 people were killed. <\/p>\n
