It is estimated that health insurance costs will become a burden for employers in the next year, i.e., 2027.

Global healthcare insurance costs are expected to decline slightly in 2027. However, premium rates will remain well above the normal inflation rate.

According to Aon’s ‘2027 Global Medical Trend Rate’ report, the average global medical trend rate is expected to be 9.0 percent in 2027. That was 9.8 percent in 2026.

Projections of medical trend rates for various regions for 2027 show mixed results. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to see a significant decline. It may decline from 11.3 per cent to 9.7 per cent. This decline is mainly due to declines in China (6 per cent) and India (10.1 per cent).

North America is projected to experience a 9.2 percent rate. That’s slightly lower than 9.3% in 2026. Canada’s rate has dropped to 7.4 percent. While the United States’ rate has remained steady at 9.5 percent.

In Europe, the rate is projected to decline from 8.2 percent to 7.5 percent. In the United Kingdom, it is down 2.0 percent to 10.0 percent. The situation in Latin America and the Caribbean region is largely stable (from 10.3 percent to 10.4 percent). While Brazil’s rate of 7.7 percent is offset by Mexico’s rate of 10.3 percent.

In the Middle East and Africa region, the rate is projected to decrease from 15.3 percent to 12.2 percent. However, here the net trend rates are actually rising. This is because the lower normal inflation rate covers local healthcare pressures.

Despite this slight decline, spending pressures on employer-sponsored medical plans remain. The global medical trend rate is three times higher than the average normal inflation rate of 2.6 percent.

The main reasons for the steady increase in insurance claims include chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and high blood pressure, as well as the burden of obesity. In addition, the increasing use of expensive GLP-1 drugs for weight loss and diabetes increases the medical incidence rate by 10.0 percent in many countries. Which is higher than the global average of 3.0 percent.

Medical incidence rates for international workers (migrants) are growing faster than domestic programs. They are generally 1.0 percent to 2.0 percent higher than the global average.

For policies in the US and the UK, the overseas medical insurance rate is projected to be 11.5 per cent in 2027. Whereas for Asia Pacific and the Middle East, it is 15 per cent. This is mainly due to the high reliance on premium health services and their high utilization.

To address rising costs, 87 percent of countries surveyed are implementing employee welfare initiatives, and two-thirds are implementing flexible benefit plans by 2027. — Agency

Kathmandu.
