The event was attended by more than 30 legal representatives and business leaders from the member companies of the American Chamber of Commerce in Nepal. <\/p>\n<p>Topics such as protection of intellectual property, protection of trademarks, innovation and business trust in Nepal were discussed in the discussion. The program was attended by Shailendra Bhumaralkar, Intellectual Property Representative of the US Patent and Trademark Office for South Asia, and Shilpi Jha, Senior Commerce Expert and Intellectual Property Policy Advisor for South Asia. They interacted directly with various businessmen and got information about their experiences, problems and concerns. <\/p>\n<p>Representatives of various companies raised the issues of trademark duplication, consumer confusion, protection of brand reputation and business value, source code theft, protection of intellectual property and creative industries, tax on intangible goods and services, etc. They also said that there is a need for more clarity, predictability, timely action and uniformity in the protection and enforcement of intellectual property. <\/p>\n<p>President of TAG_OPEN_strong_26 the American Chamber of Commerce <\/strong> <strong> Kailash <\/strong><strong>Vijaya<\/strong><strong>Nanda<\/strong> said, &#8220;Intellectual property is no longer just a legal or regulatory issue. It is increasingly becoming a matter of trust for businesses. Businesses need an environment of trust to innovate, invest and build their brands. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office shared their experiences and collaborations with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to raise awareness about intellectual property. They also informed the participants about various support and resources related to intellectual property as well as grant programs for progress. <\/p>\n<p>The commitments made by Nepal under the Paris Convention and the World Trade Organization&#8217;s Agreement on Intellectual Property Rights on Trade have provided an important basis for the protection of intellectual property. The discussion pointed out the need to increase public awareness, clear and predictable provisions, timely steps and uniform implementation of laws to make the protection of intellectual property more effective. <\/p>\n<p>The American Chamber of Commerce in Nepal has made it clear that strong protection of intellectual property is not just a matter of competition between international brands and Nepali businesses. An effective intellectual property system will benefit Nepali innovators, entrepreneurs, creative sector and technology companies, but also support international investors and established brands. <\/p>\n<p>Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Nepal, Amir R. Thapa facilitated the program. Thapa said, &#8220;We want to move from awareness to information, from information to solution and ultimately from solution to collaboration.&#8221; \u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, &#8220;Our goal is not just to have a better understanding of intellectual property. Our goal is to create an environment of trust for businesses to innovate, invest and expand their businesses under the U.S.-Nepal business relationship.&#8221; \u201d<\/p>\n<p>This type of discussion further highlights the role played by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Nepal in maintaining coordination and collaboration between U.S. and Nepali businesses, U.S. institutions, and Nepal&#8217;s policy and regulatory system.
