The Indian plate is moving towards Tibet at a rate of about 5 centimeters every year. Due to this, there is a continuous collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. This collision is creating pressure on the rocks below the Himalayas. Due to this, the risk of earthquakes has increased in the Himalayas and surrounding areas.

Scientists at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) in Hyderabad conducted research to understand this move. They used gravitational, seismic and satellite data. According to the research, the Indian plate is reaching about 100 kilometers below Tibet. In many places, this plate is bending and breaking. This research has been published in ‘Advances in Seismology for Geophysics’.

Collision between Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate{

}

The Indian plate is continuously moving northward. The Eurasian plate is nearby. The two plates have been colliding for millions of years. This collision formed the Himalayas. However, the movement of this plate continues even today. When two plates exert pressure on each other, the tension in the underground rocks increases.

This tension can accumulate for a long time. When this pressure comes out suddenly, it can cause earthquakes. Research has revealed that the Indian plate is not moving in the same way everywhere. In some places, it is bending. Due to this, some parts have been broken. Due to this, the underground structure has been separated in different places.

Old structures hidden under the Gangetic plain{

}

The research has also unearthed some ancient mountain formations beneath the Gangetic plain. These include structures such as Delhi-Haridwar, Faizabad, and Munger-Saharsa. These structures are not visible above the ground but they are located underground. They can affect the pressure generated underground. This can help to understand how earthquake-related pressure is distributed in different areas.

How thick is the crust under northern India and Tibet?TAG_OPEN_strong_20

According to research, the crust in northern India is about 35 kilometers thick. Whereas below Tibet, its thickness is about 70 kilometers. Most earthquakes in the Himalayas occur about 10 to 15 kilometers below the surface. Earthquakes at such a low depth can have a greater impact on the ground. Therefore, it is important to continuously monitor the seismic activity in the Himalayan region.

This research does not indicate the date or time of a major earthquake. Scientists cannot predict the exact date and location of the earthquake. The purpose of this research is to better understand the position of the Indian plate under the Himalayas, the fault segment, and the pressure that builds up there.

This will help scientists understand the type of movement that occurs underground and which areas may be more vulnerable to earthquakes. The Indian plate is moving towards Tibet. Therefore, the Himalayas and surrounding areas will be at risk for earthquakes. Understanding this movement is important for earthquake prevention and better preparedness. – Agency

Kathmandu.
