Kathmandu. A massive fire at the Shyam Sangini Textile Market in Surat, Gujarat, India, was not an accident but a planned arson, police investigation has revealed. Former accountant Binod Pandit Sao, 33, has been arrested in connection with the incident. <\/p>\n
According to the police, Sawale is alleged to have received a salary of around Rs 10,000 from his former workplace and set him on fire in a fit of rage saying that he was humiliated and abused at work. He had been working as an accountant there since April 2026 for a monthly salary of around Rs 30,000 and later quit his job. <\/p>\n
According to the investigation, he had bought petrol worth around Rs 150 before the incident. According to the police, when the market was deserted on the night of September 8, he sat near the stairs of the fifth floor and waited for the opportunity and set fire to the cloth parcels kept outside the shop at around 12.30 pm. <\/p>\n
The fire spread rapidly due to a large quantity of clothes and packing materials. According to the police investigation, around 14 shops were affected in the incident and a loss of around Rs 24 crore, including clothes and other items. <\/p>\n
Initially, there were other suspicions about the cause of the fire, but the CCTV footage installed in the market became the main basis of the investigation. The police said that they dug up more than 1,500 CCTV footage under the ‘Vishwas Project’ of Surat Police and tracked the movement of Savle from entering and exiting the market. <\/p>\n
After the fire, Shaw switched off his mobile phone and left Surat and reached Rajasthan and Ayodhya, police said. Later, after returning to Surat, he was arrested by the Crime Branch. <\/p>\n
