Kathmandu. August was the hottest month on record in the world this year. According to the latest data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the global average temperature in August equalled the record set in July 2023. The average temperature in August was 1.65 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. <\/p>\n
The effects of this increasing heat were also clearly seen in Europe. The period from June to August 2026 was the hottest summer on record. It was equal to the level of June 2024. <\/p>\n
Across Europe, the summer of 2026 was the third hottest summer on record. Whereas in Western Europe, it was the hottest summer ever. <\/p>\n
Low rainfall in Europe, drought increases<\/strong>{<\/span><\/p>\n In August, precipitation decreased in much of Europe. This reduced ground moisture and reduced the water level of many rivers. Severe drought conditions were widespread in France, Britain, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia. Major rivers such as the Rhine, Danube, Southern Bug and Dnieper experienced significantly less water flow than normal. <\/p>\n Many areas experienced hot and dry weather for a long time. At the end of August, some areas received rain. This provided some relief from the drought. However, excessive rainfall also brought floods in some areas. <\/p>\n The sea is too hot<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The average sea surface temperature (SST) of the outer polar oceans was also a record high in August. This equalled the record set in March 2024. The highest daily SST of the outer polar ocean was recorded at 21.11 degrees Celsius. <\/p>\n Sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean were also very warm. El Ni\u00f1o conditions are getting stronger here. Rising sea temperatures can affect global weather along with global warming. <\/p>\n Sea ice in the Arctic also decreased{<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The average extent of Arctic sea ice in August was the 12th lowest on record. This means that the sea ice area in the Arctic was significantly lower than normal. Heat and drought are also affecting forest fires in Indonesia. The weather there in August was conducive to the spread of seasonal forest fires. <\/p>\n The Copernicus data show that the effects of global warming are now clearly visible in many places.
