Kathmandu. The Government of Nepal has requested the International Loss and Damage Fund for immediate emergency assistance in the wake of massive floods and landslides caused by avalanches and bursts in the Bhotekoshi River watershed area. <\/p>\n
Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle and Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary have jointly issued a letter to Nepal asking the co-chairs of the fund for emergency assistance. <\/p>\n
The emergency letter states that the sudden and devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi River watershed area on August 26 have caused extensive loss of life and property, displacement of people, destruction of houses and strategic infrastructure, and affecting normal life. <\/p>\n
The disaster has disrupted the sensitive river systems in the Himalayan region and caused long-term economic and social damage to the downstream areas. According to preliminary estimates, the damage to physical infrastructure is worth billions of rupees. <\/p>\n
Although Nepal’s role in greenhouse gas emissions is negligible, Nepal is at high risk of climate change. This incident has made it clear how the crisis in the winter-mountain region is rapidly reaching settlements, infrastructure and food security. <\/p>\n
It has appealed to the government to take a special decision to provide immediate, direct and effective financial assistance to vulnerable and least developed countries like Nepal as per the PADT procedure. <\/p>\n
The Nepal government is ready to submit satellite details, damage assessment report and official data to the NYPD, requesting the government to designate focal points for necessary coordination. <\/p>\n
Latest Situation of Rescue and Physical Damage<\/p>\n
The floods have severely damaged trade routes, hydropower projects, roads and bridges in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts. Teams of Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force are continuously engaged in search and rescue operations in the remote and affected areas. <\/p>\n
The road linking Rasuwagadhi-Kerung trade point has been destroyed and more than 14 hydropower projects and transmission lines have been badly damaged by floods. <\/p>\n
Initial reports suggest billions of dollars worth of resources will be needed to repair the damage and rebuild and rebuild the structures. <\/p>\n
The government has said that it is working expeditiously to provide free treatment to the disaster-affected people, to provide relief to the affected families and to resume temporary transport services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
