A new study by Stanford University has revealed that the health risks of rising temperatures due to climate change are grossly underestimated. Older populations are more likely to experience extreme heat in many places and for longer periods of time than previously estimated, the report said. <\/p>\n
The study, led by a team of researchers at Stanford University, analysed how much human-caused global warming is causing global warming. Older people will be unable to bear it. Many previous studies have ignored the greater risk of heat stroke in the elderly or adults. That’s because they sweat less, have a weaker heart and often have underlying medical conditions. <\/p>\n
Older people in the worst-hit regions of South Asia, China and the Gulf could face extreme heat day and night for up to three months a year if the world warmed by 3 degrees Celsius, a new study has warned. “Countries with high levels of poverty and limited access, including India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Niger, are most at risk,” the report said. <\/p>\n
With a 30\u00b0C rise in heat, only 1.5 billion people in India, China, Pakistan and Bangladesh could be exposed to frequent, uncompensated heat waves, or nearly three-quarters of those affected worldwide. Some smaller countries will be affected by 100 per cent of the population in Bahrain and Qatar, and about 95 per cent in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Pakistan is different in both ways. About 29.5 crore people are affected. That’s more than 80% of the population. <\/p>\n
The study estimates that if the world warmed 1.50 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, 22 percent of people over the age of 60 around the world would experience at least one month of unprotected heat each year. Each extra degree of temperature means an additional 1 billion people will be exposed to about a month of heat and humidity beyond their body’s tolerance. If the world warms to 30 degrees Celsius, the elderly in South Asia and the Gulf, the worst-hit regions, could face dangerous heat day and night for three months of the year. <\/p>\n
