Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Nepali athlete Aayush Kunwar, who is affiliated to Shivam Cement, has created a new history in Nepali athletics by breaking the 30-year-old national record in the 200 meters race. <\/p>\n
At the competition held in Los Angeles, USA, he completed the 200 meters in 21.87 seconds, surpassing the national record of 21.92 seconds set in 1995. Earlier, he had set a new record of 7.02 seconds in the 60m race, breaking the record of 7.09 seconds set by Ram Krishna Chaudhary in 2001. <\/p>\n
In the 200 meters race held in London on August 9, 2026, he broke his own record of 21.87 seconds, completing the race in 21.66 seconds. He has continued to perform well, breaking his own record. <\/p>\n
There is a dearth of opportunities in the Nepali sports sector and even more so in athletics. This record was broken only after 30 years due to the lack of opportunities for the players. His goal of breaking the national record was set from 2023. As he progressed to understand the sport, he set this record by finding opportunities on his own, participating in World Athletics sanctioned competitions. World Athletics is the global governing body of sport that officially recognizes the rules, standards and records of international competitions. Therefore, only records made in tournaments approved by this organization are considered valid and authoritative at the international level, which is an important basis to give credibility to the achievements of the athletes. <\/p>\n
Shivam Cement Pvt. Ltd. has signed Ayush Kunwar to promote Nepali sports and encourage talented players. Shivam has always been with him in his athletics career from 2023 onwards. They have been providing air tickets, uniforms and necessary assistance to him when he is in need. <\/p>\n
Ayush, who was ruled out of the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea due to a hamstring injury, made a tough comeback and broke the national record a year later. Despite injuries, limited resources and institutional challenges, he has achieved this through constant training and tireless hard work. <\/p>\n
Currently undergoing training in the United States, Ayush has been continuing his campaign to take Nepali athletics to new heights with his initiative, dedication and discipline. He has been representing Nepal at the international level by managing most aspects of his coaching, competitions and most aspects of his playing life. <\/p>\n
The record may not be as high as the rest of the world, but for athletes who have to work full-time jobs, train and manage injuries on their own, breaking the 30-year-old record is an achievement in itself. <\/p>\n
Commenting after the record, Ayush Kunwar said, “I feel very proud to have broken a three-decade-old record, but the fact that this record has been maintained for 30 years is because our sprinters did not get the opportunity. Records are meant to be broken. Now a new standard has been set again and hopefully the athletes of the coming days will break it soon. For that, we are trying to come up with a private project called ‘Sprint Project’, which we will expect again with Shivam Cement. <\/p>\n
Shivam Cement congratulated Ayush for this historic achievement and said that it will continue its support for the development of Nepali sports, encouragement of athletes and national pride in the days to come. Shivam Cement is also aiming to support Ayush Kunwar’s training partner Shivaraj Parki for the World Master Indoor Championship to be held in USA in 2027.
