Rising healthcare costs for corporate employees in India have been a major concern.

According to the report ‘The Corporate Health Protection Pulse 2026’ released after a new survey by TATA AIG General Insurance, nearly 75 per cent of the respondents said that the cover provided by the employer is not enough in case of emergency hospitalization. The survey also revealed that there is a huge gap between corporate awareness and action.

The survey received responses from 748 respondents. The study found that rising healthcare costs remain one of the top concerns for corporate employees. This has outpaced other concerns such as job security, EMI liability and global volatility. Unexpected hospital bills can cause significant financial losses.

More than 94 per cent of respondents said unexpected medical expenses cause greater financial stress than worry about career stability or job loss. This fear is compounded by a widespread lack of economic resilience. Seven out of 10 employees said they could live on their current savings for six months or less if they lost their jobs. Only 12 percent said their safety net could last more than a year.

Similarly, 84 per cent of respondents agreed that it is important to have individual health coverage alongside group medical cover (GMC) provided by their employer. Nearly half (45 per cent) said they were relying solely on the company’s plan.

Lack of awareness and general ‘buy later’ attitude were cited as the main barriers preventing employees, especially those aged 28-34, from buying separate insurance policies.

This security is especially dangerous during inter-career changes. Healthcare expenses were identified as the biggest financial concern during the job change, more than income loss and EMI commitments. However, 88 percent of employees said that uninterrupted health coverage is important during a job change. Only 40 per cent of employers were aware of the insurance solution to maintain continuous medical cover.

About 75 percent of respondents agreed that the cover provided by the employer is not enough in the event of an emergency hospitalization. Apart from this, only 41 percent said that they are fully aware of the specific features and benefits included in their company’s plan.

The survey covered 748 corporate employees in the age group of 28 to 55 years in 8 major urban areas of India and all participants were currently covered under a group medical insurance policy provided by the employer. –Agency

Kathmandu.
