The trend of premature resignation of heads of financial sector regulators is now being seen in private sector companies as well. The chiefs of the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON), Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), Nepal Insurance Authority and other bodies have not been able to survive for long. But now this is the case with private sector companies as well.

The latest example is United Ajod Insurance. In recent times, it has been seen that the CEO of the company, who is in the management of the company, has not been able to stay for the stipulated tenure. The main reason for this seems to be the pressure of the company’s board of directors.

The board of directors of the company had appointed Kamal Gautam as CEO on December 26, 2081 after the untimely death of Shrawan Kumar Rawal, the then CEO of United Ajod, a non-life insurance company. Appointed for a four-year term, he resigned on January 17, 2082 without even 13 months of work. He was forced to leave the company due to unnecessary interference from the company’s board of directors.

Gautam, who has long experience in the banking sector, had played a crucial role in rescuing the troubled Everest Insurance company. He was at the helm of Everest Insurance before merging with Himalayan General Insurance. Gautam had completed his first four-year term at Everest Insurance Company and also completed a one-year term in his second term.

Gautam was appointed as the Deputy CEO after starting the integrated business in the name of Himalayan Everest Insurance on July 17, 2079. He voluntarily resigned from Himalayan Everest Insurance on February 15, 2080. About 9 months later, he was appointed CEO by the board of directors of United Ajod Insurance.

After Gautam’s resignation, the board of directors brought in Narayan Kumar Bhattarai as the CEO. Bhattarai, who was appointed for a four-year term, was forced to resign less than three months after the board of directors intervened and undue pressure. Bhattarai was appointed CEO only on April 23, 2083. Prior to joining United, he had been out of the insurance sector for 3 years. Prior to this, he was the CEO of Gurans Life Insurance Company for 46 months.

Among the promoter shareholders of United Ajod Insurance, Chaudhary Group holds the highest 12.32% shareholding.
