In order to make medical and nursing education more effective, practical and patient-centered, Nepal Medical College has started giving priority to simulation teaching methods. For this purpose, a program called ‘Simulation on Triage Management’ has been conducted for the second year (13th batch) BSc Nursing students of Nepal Medical College.

In the program conducted under the supervision and facilitation of lecturer Pooja Prakash, practical exercises were conducted on the triage process to be done according to the condition of the patient in the pre-hospital and emergency department, the role of nurses, doctors and health workers of different levels and mutual coordination.

In the program, the students practiced prioritization of patients, treatment management and team coordination in case of emergency, simulating the real environment of the hospital. Instructor Pooja Prakash said that this has helped to translate the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom into practice.

According to lecturer Pooja Prakash, studying only through the traditional lecture method can make it difficult for students to remember and put into practice. But learning through simulation has the benefit of being able to work with confidence while on duty in the hospital, present the subject clearly in the exam, and remember knowledge for a long time.

Demographic changes seen in health care, increase in life expectancy, use of new technology, evidence-based treatment system and research-oriented practices have made medical education more challenging. There is a need to make the education system timely to produce capable, skilled and professional health manpower to face such challenges. For this, it has become the need of the day to include modern teaching methods like skill demonstration, role play, project-based learning, evidence-based practice, drill and simulation in the curriculum along with lectures.

Simulation teaching is the process of getting students to practice in a safe environment by simulating the situation of a real hospital or patient. It helps students develop the necessary skills, decision-making skills, communication skills, and teamwork before practicing directly with a real patient. It also boosts their confidence by giving them experience of how to make decisions even in rare and complex situations.

The use of simulation in medical education is believed to have been systematically developed in the 1930’s according to modern concepts. However, its basis can be seen in ancient times. History has it that Indian surgeon Sushruta used to make his students practice surgery on lotus leaves and animal skin.

Similarly, in 1968, a computer-operated full-body human mannequin ushered in a new era in medical education. Since then, special models for CPR practice and various types of maniquins and virtual simulation systems have been developed for nursing education.

Simulation is considered to be especially effective in nursing education. Skills ranging from basic patient care, dressing, injection, patient position change to emergency treatment management are taught through maniquins and real-time simulations. In modern simulation, not only machines but also the practice of realistic learning by presenting students in different roles is increasing.

Nepal Medical College (NMC) has stated that it will continue such practical and student-centered teaching programs and further expand simulation-based teaching with the goal of producing skilled, responsible, and self-confident health workers of the future.

Kathmandu.
