Butwal Power Company Limited (BPC) has launched a 50 KW green hydrogen pilot project in Pyuthan with the support of the UK government and the World Bank. The company inaugurated the project established on the premises of Jhimruk Hydropower Project.

According to BPC, the 12 MW Jhimruk Hydropower Project will use renewable energy to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis.

The project is implemented with technical assistance from the World Bank and UK International Development Fund through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) under the UK Government.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by lawmakers of Lumbini Province, representatives of Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, representatives of local governments, Chief District Officer, Nepal Electricity Authority, World Bank, FCDO and various stakeholders in the energy sector.

BPC has installed a 50 kW alkaline electrolyser system in the project that will produce hydrogen with 99.99% purity. The hydrogen produced will be compressed at 150 bar pressure and stored in cylinders. It will be used to test and evaluate various potential areas.

The plant, built by China’s CPU Hydrogen Power Technology Company, was successfully operational on April 13. The first hydrogen cylinder was also successfully filled on the same day.

Green hydrogen is seen worldwide as an important energy driver in the transition to low-carbon energy systems. Green hydrogen, which is produced by splitting water using electricity from renewable sources, will help reduce carbon footprints in sectors such as transport, industry, fertilizer production and long-term energy storage.

BPC expects to gain valuable experience and data on hydrogen production, storage, safety, operation, technical performance and economic viability from the pilot project. The company believes that the learning will help in developing commercial-scale projects in the future, building regulatory frameworks and energy policy.

At a time when the government of Nepal is preparing to implement a 2.5 MW green hydrogen pilot project in Hetauda, BPC’s project is seen as the initial practice of green hydrogen technology in Nepal.

BPC said the project will provide an important basis to study the possibilities of harnessing Nepal’s abundant hydropower resources to produce green hydrogen for domestic consumption, industrial purposes, transport and potential regional markets.

BPC is one of the leading private energy companies in Nepal, which has been active in the energy sector for nearly 6 decades. The company has been working in the development of hydropower, transmission and distribution as well as in the areas of energy innovation.

Kathmandu.
