Kathmandu. The number of passengers on domestic flights has dropped drastically after the airfare for domestic flights has increased significantly in the past one month. The private sector airlines have increased the fuel fare by up to 50 percent after the price of aviation fuel has increased by more than 100 percent. <\/p>\n
The price of petrol and diesel has increased by 102 percent in the last three months due to the US-Israeli invasion of Iran. <\/p>\n
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the number of passengers from the Middle East and Gulf countries has dropped to around 7,000 passengers from Kathmandu-based Tribhuvan International Airport on a daily basis. However, the number of road passengers has not increased significantly due to the decrease in the number of air passengers. The BP Highway and the Nagdhunga-Muglin road sections, the two main highways that lead to the Terai from Kathmandu, have been obstructed due to landslides and road construction. <\/p>\n
According to air service providers, the maximum impact of the fare hike has been felt on the Kathmandu-Dhangadhi route. Besides, the number of passengers on flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and Surkhet has also decreased. Due to limited flights to Dhangadhi and Surkhet, all tickets were sold one or two days before the weekend, but due to the decrease in the number of passengers, tickets are now easily available in these destinations a few hours before the flight on the same day. <\/p>\n
According to air service providers, the number of passengers on Janakpur, Simara, Sauraha, Pokhara and Bhairahawa routes has decreased by 30 to 35 percent. Airlines have been compelled to cut down flights on the Pokhara route, which has the highest number of flights from Kathmandu. <\/p>\n
As the number of passengers decreases, the operating costs of the airlines have increased and the profit has started to come under pressure. Not only domestic but international airlines are also under financial pressure. <\/p>\n
Airlines have had a double impact on the increase in fuel prices as the high cost of flying is related to fuel. Due to the shortage, aviation fuel has not only become expensive in the international market but the price of aviation fuel has also become expensive with the US dollar. <\/p>\n
With fuel prices continuing to rise, it will be a challenge for domestic airlines to keep their business going.
