Half of the actuarial analysts in Nepal do not get any training from their company’s appointed actuaries.

A research report made public by the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA) has revealed that existing training opportunities are informal, discussion-based, and narrow-focused. Peer learning and formal guidance are largely not available within the insurance company.

The Actuarial Appointment Directive 2024 issued by the Insurance Authority is clear: The appointed actuaries must provide at least ten hours of on-the-job training to actuarial analysts for each relevant job. A January 2026 survey showed that less than one in three companies complied with this provision.

Among the actuarial analysts surveyed, 50 percent said that they did not get any training opportunities from the actuarial appointee. Of those who received the training, 22.5% reported that they had less than 10 hours of training. Similarly, a total of 27.5% of actuarial analysts have received the minimum training as per the guidelines.

The quality of training available is also a matter of concern. The survey revealed that most of the training is informal and discussion-based, mainly focused on actuarial assessment and model setting. A small number of analysts reported receiving more structured training covering advanced topics such as pricing, product modeling, IFRS 17, or risk-based capital and solvency frameworks.

The executive summary of the report states, “The informal and unstructured nature of the training has led to only moderate levels of satisfaction. “

The issue extends beyond formal training to the need for broader thinking about business investments. A suitable environment with fee sponsorship for the examination, study leave, access to study materials, can be important factors in the progress of the analyst towards full actual qualification. But it is sad that these opportunities and environments are not available.

The survey indicated that the actuary’s treatment of actuarial analysts on the part of the insurer is unprofessional. Less than one-third of companies have offered exam fee reimbursement or study packages as part of their strategy to retain an actuarial analyst.

Training and advice from senior engineers is another major gap in improving the experience of an actuarial analyst. Although some analysts report that they have had the opportunity to interact with actuaries assigned to specific tasks, extensive mentoring relationships, long-term guidance, career development advice, in-house sponsorship, are largely lacking.

Nepal Actuarial Society, which has around 50 members, provides a potential platform for peer learning and inter-company knowledge exchange. But its ability to provide opportunities for systematic mentorship programs is limited.

Actuarial analysts say that in order to produce skilled manpower, these issues should be addressed:

· Structured and practical training programs of sufficient duration

· Access to senior actuaries for advisors and knowledge transfers

· Examination fee reimbursement and study leave facility

· Direct involvement in high-level tasks, including modeling and pricing

· Workshops and Knowledge Sharing Programs Organized by the Authority

The survey report of the Authority has called upon the authority to organize training workshops focused on practical actuarial work and collaborate with international actuarial organizations to bring external expertise to the Nepali market.

{{TAG_OPEN_em_30}File photo/Source: Actuarial Society of Nepal

Kathmandu.
