In October 2022, a tiny bird stunned the world. After three years of scientific study, a record has now been recorded.

The bird, called the Bar-tail Godwit, was later named B6 by scientists. The bird flew directly from the Kuskokwim Delta in Alaska, USA, to Tasmania. The distance was about 13,560 miles [13,560 km].

It is the longest non-stop bird migration tour in the world. This is a record set in the Guinness World Records. Scientists from the US Geological Survey (USGS) tracked the bird’s journey by attaching a small solar-powered tag to it. For 11 days this bird flew continuously without food, water or rest.

The Bar-tailed Godwit is a small bird weighing only 300–400 grams. However, its body undergoes significant changes before migrating. A few weeks before the flight, it eats a lot and stores fat. The fat increases so much that the bird’s weight doubles. It compresses its internal organs.

The stomach, intestines and liver are also 55 percent smaller. These organs are no longer needed. Because birds don’t eat on the road. Body fat is burned to provide energy and also produces water. In this way, the bird ‘eats’ its stomach so that it can be light and fly far. Developed over millions of years, it is a marvellous trick of nature.

This bird flies continuously for 11 days. During this time it neither sleeps nor eats or drinks water. But its brain needs rest. So it sleeps half sleep, one eye sleeps and half the brain. While the other half remains awake. This process is called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep.

When flying, the bird sleeps with one eye closed and the other eyes waiting. It senses the Earth’s magnetic field for navigation. It has a quantum mechanism in its eyes. Which allows it to see magnetic lines. It also uses the stars, the sun, air pressure and weather changes to determine its path.

The Pacific Ocean is vast. There is only water at the bottom and no land. This bird withstands storms, strong winds, and cold. Sometimes the wind blows against it. Which makes its journey even more difficult. However, this bird has been traveling on this route for thousands of years.

Scientists believe that this migration is very long. That’s because Alaska provides plenty of food in the summer and Tasmania provides a safe haven in the winter. But now the danger is increasing. Gas farms are being built in Tasmania. This can damage the birds’ resting places. Such milestones can be difficult if stopover sites are lost.

This trip shows how many amazing machines nature can create. A 300-gram bird can fly for 11 days. The longest commercial flight lasts only 20 hours. Humans spend billions to build machines, but this bird does it without an engine, using only fat and instincts.

According to scientists, these birds are threatened by climate change and habitat loss. The B6 bird’s journey tells us that we need to protect these little wonders of nature. This record is not only in the Guinness Book of World Records but also makes us feel the power of nature. –Agency

Kathmandu.
