Kathmandu. Bangladesh’s cabinet recently approved a proposal to allow India to transport cargo to the northeastern Indian states using its ports and land routes. With this decision, new routes will be opened for the movement of cargo from Bangladesh’s major ports of Chittagong and Mongla to the northeastern states of India. <\/p>\n
Although this arrangement is primarily aimed at connecting the northeastern states of India with the sea route, it is expected to have a major impact on regional trade and transit systems. According to analysts, Nepal could also benefit indirectly from the strengthening of the South Asian Regional Access Network. <\/p>\n
Currently, Nepal is dependent on Kolkata, Haldia and Vishakhapatnam ports of India for international trade. If Bangladeshi ports are extended in the future, Nepal will have the possibility of getting an alternative sea route. This can provide an opportunity for landlocked countries like Nepal to diversify trade routes. <\/p>\n
Similarly, this decision is expected to have a positive impact in activating the Bangladesh-India-Nepal-Bhutan Regional Transport and Trade Cooperation. If the regional transit infrastructure is further expanded, the possibility of transporting goods from Bangladeshi ports to Nepal via India will increase. Which can help reduce both shipping time and cost. <\/p>\n
According to analysts, there is a possibility of easing access to the sea route especially for industries in the eastern part of Nepal such as Biratnagar. For Nepal to directly benefit from this agreement, it will require more transit agreements with India and Bangladesh, and active initiatives in infrastructure development. <\/p>\n
Experts say that if regional cooperation is strengthened, this decision can give a new impetus to South Asian trade, investment and connectivity. <\/p>\n
