According to the results of a new study, most consumers assume that cybercrime occurs at home. However, many overestimate the security of their online practices. This discrepancy may help explain why 39 per cent of people have already fallen victim to scams.

The study released by Boltec highlights the growing cybersecurity gap in emerging and developed markets in the Asia Pacific region. The study, conducted by independent research firm Blackbox Research, surveyed 3,850 consumers across 11 markets in the Asia-Pacific region to assess their online behavior, experiences and attitudes towards cyber risk.

The Asia Pacific Region’s Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 report evaluated consumer cyber preparedness using five indicators (Experience, Habits, Feedback, Trends and Beliefs). It provides a comprehensive picture of how cyber risk is understood and managed.

Emerging markets such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia are at high risk of cybercrime and repetitive scams. Developed markets such as South Korea and Japan show the least trust in institutions and service providers to protect personal data.

Despite the high trust in online safety, the study found a significant gap between perception and action. While 85 per cent of respondents rated their habits as ‘good’ or ‘very good’, only 44 per cent consistently practice good online hygiene. Password reuse is normal. About 70 percent of users, especially young users, admit to using the same password on their account. “With more and more people at risk of being scammed, there’s a huge gap between public interest and personal action,” said David Black, founder and CEO of Blackbox Research.

Cyber threats are becoming increasingly difficult to detect, especially with the rise of AI-driven scams. Nearly two-thirds of consumers expect someone in their household to be a victim of cybercrime within the next year, and 92 percent worry that AI will accelerate scams.

Scam calls are very common in emerging markets. Whereas suspicious SMS messages are more common in developed markets. Fiscal deficits are particularly significant in emerging markets. Half of the victims mentioned monetary impacts. In developed markets, 1 in 4 people lost more than $500 per incident.

This study demonstrates the growing demand for cybersecurity solutions and emphasizes shared responsibility. Nearly half of the respondents believe that cybersecurity should be a collaborative effort between government, banks, telecommunications companies, tech platforms and individuals. Only 14 percent consider it a personal responsibility.

Speaking about the need for corporate action, Philipp Weiner, CEO of BoltTech’s APAC, said, “Our goal is clear: to help consumers confidently manage cyber risk by providing simple and reliable security throughout their daily digital experience. —Agency

Kathmandu.
