Kathmandu. Ten of the 51 psychiatric hospitals under investigation for mental health insurance fraud in the cities of Xianyang and Yichang in central China’s Hubei province have been found to be involved in fraudulent medical practices. <\/p>\n
According to China Daily, the investigation team included officials from the state government and was guided by the country’s top health and healthcare safety regulator. However, a thorough examination of about 9,200 patients admitted to those hospitals or recently discharged did not reveal any cases of admission of people without mental disorders. However, cases of persistent hospitalization and incorrect bed occupancy were identified after clinical recovery. <\/p>\n
The psychiatrists involved in this scam defrauded the National Medical Insurance Fund of about 3.49 million Chinese yuan (about $505,000) in the last two years. Their methods included manipulating medical care items, inflating medical care costs, and falsifying medical documents. <\/p>\n
After the publication of the report, executives or employees of 15 hospitals and nine government officials were detained. Similarly, nurses of 4 hospitals were also fined.
