Kathmandu. China has established its first university dedicated to the study of risk management and emergency management. This new organization will promote and advance emergency management education and training. <\/p>\n
The university is expected to help alleviate the nationwide shortage of professionals in this important field. China already has a Ministry of Emergency Management. <\/p>\n
The new university, located in Langfang city of Hebei province, was inaugurated by Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing in January 2026, Xinhua news agency reported. “The establishment of the university represents a major decision aimed at cultivating talent and strengthening academic development in emergency management,” Zhang said. \u2019<\/p>\n
The University is expected to focus on key disaster and accident risk prevention and emergency response, strengthen basic theoretical research, and accelerate breakthroughs in key key technologies and common enabling technologies. “This initiative will advance the modernization of the country’s emergency management system and capabilities,” Zhang said. The University should conduct specialized research on the entire spectrum of emergency management work and create a set of topics and key topics that address specific areas such as workplace safety, natural disaster prevention and control, and emergency rescue and relief operations. \u2019<\/p>\n
Zhang urged the new university to develop a more “emergency management plus” training model, with a strong focus on practical skills and real-world practices, and develop interdisciplinary professionals “who understand the industry, gain technical expertise, value safety, and respond effectively to emergencies.” <\/p>\n
The new university is expected to provide a stronger practical platform by improving students’ operational preparedness for real emergencies. It has 15 schools. It covers areas such as emergency technology and management, mine safety, chemical safety, and emergency equipment. <\/p>\n
According to the Blue Paper on Security and Emergency Management Talent in China released in January 2025, the total demand for security and emergency management professionals in the country is about 16 million.
