The UK government has announced that it will crack down on children’s use of social media and mobile phones in schools. In a press release issued on January 19, the UK government outlined two key decisions aimed at improving children’s health and learning.

First, there will be more restrictions on mobile phones in schools. The government has clearly said that schools should be phone-free. This means that children should not use the phone during class, rest, lunch or any other time. Most schools already have a phone policy, but Ofsted (the government body that oversees schools) will now check that the policy is being properly enforced during each inspection.

Schools that are struggling will receive special assistance. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said mobile phones would not be allowed in schools. There is no excuse.

Social media response requested

}

The second and most important step is with regard to social media. The UK government is launching a major consultation (a referendum programme). It will check the appropriate minimum age for children to use social media. As in Australia, it is also being considered whether social media should be banned altogether for children under a certain age (such as the age of 16).

FAQ{

How TAG_OPEN_li_26 can age authentication be more accurate to prevent children from creating accounts by lying?

Is the current digital age limit too low?

TAG_OPEN_li_24 Should social media apps disable or limit addictive features such as endless scrolling, streaks, etc.?

How parents can help more. For example, simple parental controls or screen time guidelines?

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said that while the Online Safety Act had already achieved much good, parents were concerned. Therefore, further action is needed. The government will organise meetings across the country where parents, children and members of the public will share their views. The answer to that question will be available by the summer.

This is because the UK government recognises that excessive screen time is having a negative impact on children’s learning, concentration, friendships and mental health. New screen time guidelines for parents of children between the ages of 5 and 16 will be released soon. –Agency

Kathmandu.
