KATHMANDU: The Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) has urged the political parties to prepare a manifesto giving first priority to the economic agenda. Organizing a press conference on Sunday to give suggestions on the issues that the parties should give priority to in the manifesto, the request was made public. The suggestions made public today will be discussed with the national level parties.

President of CNI Birendra Raj Pandey said that although there have been many political changes from 2007 BS to 2082 Zenji movement, the economic change has not gained momentum. He said although the political parties had brought economic agendas in their election manifestos, the implementation was not given priority when they were in power.

The CNI has stressed that along with political stability for the development of the country, the first requirement should be given to a strong economy. Pandey stressed that the political parties should move ahead with national consensus on the issues and agendas of economic development for the prosperity of the entire nation including good governance, economic development and employment. The CNI has suggested that the national consensus should clearly mention the long-term vision for the development of the country, priority areas and projects, and a time-bound action plan for its implementation.

The CNI has also urged the government to give high priority to the effective implementation of the faceless, contactless and paperless system for good governance and to promote industry, production and entrepreneurship.

The CNI has also suggested giving priority to the integrated industrial development strategy, formulation of new laws and reforms, improvement in good governance focusing on the use of information technology and reforms in tax system to attract investment.

“There is no coordination between the commitments made in the manifestos of the parties and the actions to be carried out when these parties are in the government, and the past experiences that political agenda is getting priority over economic agenda,” the CNI said.

Pandey said that there was a need to fill the huge gap seen in the policies and programs of the government, budget and their implementation, the priorities were changing instead of the economic policies and plans for the economic development of the country. He said that the common people are worried as the issues of good governance are not in words but not in practice. Likewise, it has also stressed the need to make the agencies and individuals responsible for the effective implementation of the announced economic policies and plans.

Industrialization, export promotion and import substitution, promotion of domestic goods and market regulation, foreign direct investment, skills and employment, infrastructure development, good governance, innovation, home, small and medium enterprises, information technology-based industries, education and health, energy, tourism, agriculture, forest and environment, among others, have been included in the committee.

The CNI has stressed the need for national consensus and a ‘thinking paper’ on economic development. The CNI has suggested that a common thinking paper should be prepared on the basis of political consensus regarding economic development by looking at the experience and practice of neighbouring countries. The Confederation has been insisting that the economy should be made to $ 100 billion by the next 10 years. For this, the CNI has been conducting a comprehensive study with the participation of national and international experts. The study will be completed and made public within the next few months.

CNI senior vice-president Nirvana Chaudhary said that all political parties should prepare manifestos keeping the economy at the centre and it should make it clear on how the country could move forward in terms of development in the coming days. He also stressed that the confidence of the private sector should be assured on how to move forward for overall economic development.

On the occasion, office-bearer member Bidushi Rana, National Council member Pampha Dhamala, Director General Dr. Ghanashyam Ojha and others were also present on the occasion.

Kathmandu.
